Although 2005 saw Google adjust their algorithms to devalue much of the benefits associated with reciprocal links there are still times that we advocate their use.
Reciprocal links on their own may no longer present a workable tactic when it comes to ranking for highly competitive terms in Google, however, they still offer an effective means of encouraging regular spidering of new websites.
What is a reciprocal link exchange?
Reciprocal links are simply an exchange of links between two web pages, search engines see a link from page A to page B as a vote for page B from page A. The clickable text, or anchor text, that forms the link reflects the 'context' of the vote
A link that uses 'SEO Company Glasgow' as the anchor text lets search engines know what the target page (the page the link points to) is about. The more links that point to a page using 'SEO Company Glasgow' as the anchor text, the more relevant the page would become and rankings would increase for that term.
If every link to a page uses the exact same anchor text it could be seen as unnatural. Search engines can view this type of linking as an attempt to game their ranking algorithm rather than a vote that cites quality content. Its best to use variants on a theme.
